The town Mtskheta is the administrative centre of the Mtskheta – Mtianeti region and is one of the oldest city of Eastern Georgia .It was the capital of the Kingdom Iberia (3d c BC – 5th c AD). The Historical Monuments of Mtskheta became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994. Visiting Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Jvari monastery, which is built on a hill opposite Mtskheta, at the confluence of Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers. According to Georgian hagiography, in the 1st century AD a Georgian Jew from Mtskheta named Elias was in Jerusalem when Jesus was crucified. Elias bought Jesus’ robe from a Roman soldier at Golgotha and brought it back to Georgia. Mtskheta was declared as the Holy City in 2014 by Georgian Orthodox Church.
